The last stop was 산사원, where we learned about Korean alcohol. It was a cool experience but the cookies did not taste as good as I thought they would, which was disappointing.

We watched some videos and then learned how to make them ourselves. Then we headed to 한가원 where we learned about Korea's traditional cookies. Afterwards, we went to lunch and ate samgyetang (삼계탕), which was the first time I had ever had it. There we rode a monorail and saw a lot of rocks which were now artistically pleasing. The week after the Mud Festival, Sogang took us on a trip to Pocheon (경기도 포천). So it seems that I have a lot of posting to do for the past couple of weeks that I've been away. Anyways, I hope that this trip had some influence on them and that they might have a little more interest in Korea. All of their grandparents helped in the war and they can try to put in the time to learn a little more about Korea. They least they could do was be open minded try new things out. They were always complaining about the food, about where we were staying, what we were doing, and I can understand that this being their first time in Korea, they aren't accustomed to the food, the language and the culture, but that does not give them the right to be disrespectful. The only disappointing factor about the trip happened to be the other foreigners. This whole trip was amazing and I'm so glad that I was able to be a part of it. It was a lot of fun, but bittersweet because after the concert, the foreigners were separated from the Korean students and we weren't able to have a proper goodbye. We all got a certificate for completion of the trip and then after supper, we got to watch the Open Concert.
After the tours, we went back to the amusement park and finished with the closing ceremony. Museums, Dorasan Station, Wish for Peace Group Group Art, Closing Ceremony, Open Concert That evening at the amusement park, we watched a bunch of performances prepared by members of our teams. This Friday was a lot of fun! I had never gone rafting before, and though it was scary, it turned out to be a really good experience. After being eliminated, I went outside and played games with my teammates and got to know them even better.īreakfast, Hantan River rafting, Lunch, Freedom Protection Peace Museum, Supper, Night for Unity at Imijingak Pyeonghwanuri Park But, ultimately, the winner was a Korean student. Esther was eliminated but then made it back into the competition and did really well. I made it to the 7th question before being eliminated. The foreigners all worked with their translators from the trip which made it a little easier. Esther and I both were able to participate (27 foreigners and 83 Koreans). The recording for the show took almost all day. After we got back to base, we had dinner and then watched a performance prepared by the soldiers training there.īreakfast, Dam of Peace, Lunch, Recording for Challenge for the Golden Bell (our recording aired on August 15th, which was a special since all the questions were related to the war, and it aired on Korea's National Day), Supper At Gachilbong Post, we met Boom (a Korean entertainer) and Andy from Shinhwa. We walked about 13k in the summer heat, but because we took too long, we weren't able to go to the 4th Tunnel. The third day was the hardest of all the things we did on this week long trip. It was a little awkward at first but knowing Korean helped bridge the gap.īreakfast, Opening Ceremony, Lunch, DMZ Museum, Unification Observatory, Supper The first day we did a lot of group activities to get to know our team members better. Participant Registration, Lunch, Orientation Part 1, Supper, Orientation Part 2 There about 30 students on a team, with 5 teams for each group: Green Group, Peace Group and Unification Group. There were almost 600 Korean students who also participated. The others were from: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, France, England, Turkey, India, Thailand, Philippines, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Belgium.
There were about 50 other foreigners there including me and Esther, and one other student from Sogang (the three of us made up the Americans). Esther and I participated in March 4 Peace, which was to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War.
